Promoting online exports – Opportunities for Vietnam enterprises25/03/2016On 16/03/2016, Ms. Lai Viet Anh, Deputy Director of Vietnam E-Commerce and Information Technology Agency, Ministry of Industry and Trade made a speech at the workshop "Gold Supplier – Online export solutions for Vietnam enterprises" hosted by the world leading e-commerce Alibaba Group and Investment and Technology Joint Stock Company (OSB JSC) in Hanoi.
At the workshop, Ms Anh said, the market share of electronic commerce (e-commerce) in Vietnam has nearly doubled after 2 years. The revenue of Vietnam e-commerce retail market (B2C) reached 2.2 billion US dollars in 2013, 2.97 billion US dollars in 2014, and 4.07 billion US dollars in 2015. This demonstrates that e-commerce in Vietnam is growing rapidly. It seems to be promoted the development of the domestic and overseas market in global supply chains in the future.
In addition, she highlighted: 'B2B transactions rate has majority proportion of the total e-commerce transactions in the world trend. For example, B2B transaction rate represents 91% of total e-commerce transactions in South Korea and it is also accounted for 50% in Thailand”. Mr. Tran Xuan Thuy, Vietnam Alibaba's Director agreed this view point and suggested that the signing of the free trade agreements will create new opportunities for Vietnam's economy and enterprises by using the online export tools to promote B2B e-commerce type.
Talking about the opportunities for online export activities in Vietnam, Ms. Anh told that the biggest import markets of Vietnam goods such as the US, EU, Japan, Korea ... have higher internet access rates. She asserted that it will be very effective if enterprises know how to use the internet to access those export markets. In addition, the signing of free trade agreements such as Vietnam - EU trade agreements (EVFTA); Agreement on the Trans-Pacific partnership (TPP); Vietnam - Korea Free trade agreements; and joined the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) ... will give them great opportunities to promote export activities. She also showed a survey result of 800 export enterprises in Vietnam with the rate of B2B transactions increasingly.
According to the experts at the workshop, the international importers tend to gradually shift from a traditional environment to an online environment to optimize operations. Therefore, taking advantage of the online exporters have played an important role for Vietnam exporters.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Vice Chairman cum General Secretary of Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM) realized, e-commerce activities in Vietnam only thrive in HCMC and Hanoi, while these activities are not improved in the other provinces.
The experts affirmed that the development of e-commerce should narrow the gap between two major cities and other provinces aiming to create more opportunities for businesses. Mr. Tran Trong Tuyen, Executive Director of DKT Technology Company (providing online sales platform bizweb.vn to about 15,000 retail businesses in Vietnam), judged that “Currently, 75% of e-commerce market share is in Hanoi and HCMC. If the markets of other provinces develop such as Hanoi and HCMC, the e-commerce market size in Vietnam will increase 3-5 times and e-commerce revenue from retail business can be increased corresponding this figure”.
Mr. Tuyen said Vietnam has 90 million people, nearly half of them use the Internet. This is a big market for using e-commerce and Vietnam e-commerce is a potential development market.
Mr. Hung and enterprises also recommended that in order to increase e-commerce market size of Vietnam, the state management agencies, enterprises and the organizations should endeavor to develop this type of business in the provinces and other cities excluding Hanoi and HCMC. According to VECOM, in 2020, online retail market size in Vietnam will reach 10 billion US dollars, accounting for about 5% of the retail market. Mr. Hung forecasted that “From 2016 to 2020, and even by 2025, e-commerce in Vietnam will increase rapidly with the growth rate of over 30% per year”
